Oral Health Project Continues to Reach More Children
The Oral health project was officially launched in September 2015 during the national oral health annual week held in in Tlokweng. The project is fully sponsored by Wrigley Inc. (A Swedish based candy manufacturing company). The main is to reach out to 32 000 students country wide through Oral Health Education. To educate, inculcate and encourage good oral health habits among school going kids aged 2year to 14 years. To date the project has reached out to 20 618 students in 3 different location (Serowe, Tlokweng and Francistown). These numbers have been achieved through the strong support of different stakeholders each playing a different role that adds on to the strength of the project and these are:
The Ministry of Health: Entered a memorandum of understanding with the implementing partner (SOS Children’s Villages Botswana). Through the help and support of this ministry dentists, therapists and hygienists have been released to assist with the screening at different locations where the project is implemented. Princess Marina has in the past two years been serving Tlokweng and Gaborone schools, while Sekgoma Memorial served Serowe, Paje, Thabala, Mogorosi and Tshimoyapula school and Jubilee Hospital served Francistown.
Colgate South Africa has also come on board assisting with the sponsorship of toothpastes and brushes for all participants in all the locations.
The Ministry of Education have also offered support by offering permission for the project to work with a few selected schools and releasing teachers to attend the Training of Trainers workshop to enable them to facilitate during school visits and for sustainability purposes.
The project is yet to reach out to many students to meet its 32 000 students target by September 2017 and will further spread/expand to other areas (hopefully Kgatleng and Kweneng districts) this year
