Cultivating Hope and Sustainability Through Hydroponics
At SOS Children’s Villages Botswana, we believe that every initiative which empowers children and families to live sustainably is a step toward a brighter future.
We are deeply grateful to our incredible sponsor, Gaborone Diacore Marathon whose generous support has made our Hydorponics Project possible. Through this partnership, Green Gem Nursery, Garden Maintenance and Landscaping has played a vital role in bringing their expertise by helping us grow a variety of fresh, nutritious vegetables, including crisp, healthy lettuce.

A Growing Partnership for a Greener Future
With the expert guidance of Green Gem’s team, our children and caregivers recently had the exciting opportunity to learn about lettucing harvesting and the science behind hydroponic farming. The session was hands-on, engaging, and filled with curiosity as the children discovered how plants can grow without soil, using only nutrient-rich water.
Hydroponics represents an innovative approach to agriculture that aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainability and healthy living. By adopting this system, we can grow crops in a controlled environment, conserve water, reduce dependency on soil, and ensure consistent access to fresh produce year-round, all while teaching valuable life skills to the children in our care.

The Importance of Hydroponics
Hydroponic farming is not just a modern agricultural technique; it is a solution to food insecurity and environmental challenges. In a country like Botswana, where climate conditions can be harsh and water conservation is vital, hydroponics offers an efficient, sustainable, and scalable way to produce food locally.
By introducing hydroponics into our community, we aim to:
-
Promote food security by producing fresh vegetables throughout the year.
-
Encourage healthy eating and nutrition awareness among children and families.
-
Teach agricultural innovation and practical skills to children and youth.
-
Reduce environmental impact by saving water and minimizing waste.
Building a Green Village
Diacore Gaborone Marathon’s generous sponsorship and Green Gem’s dedicated expertise, SOS Children’s Village is steadily transforming into a green village, one where sustainability, health, and empowerment go hand in hand.
Each harvest represents more than food; it symbolises growth, knowledge and independence. The children in our care are not only learning to nurture plants but also developing a deep appreciation for nature, hard work, and community collaboration.
