In an era where digital threats are constantly evolving, the safety and privacy of sensitive information have never been more critical. SOS Children’s Villages Botswana took a significant step forward in its commitment to data security by hosting an intensive training session focused on Cybersecurity Awareness and Data Protection Compliance.

This invaluable training was facilitated by ServiceXcellence, a leading provider of corporate IT solutions and capacity-building programs. The sessions were designed to equip the SOS team with the knowledge and tools needed to protect the personal data of its most vulnerable stakeholders—children, families, staff, donors, and partner organisations.

The training covered key legislation including the Data Protection Act of Botswana and the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), with a focus on its seven foundational principles:

1. Lawfulness, Fairness, and Transparency

2. Purpose Limitation

3. Data Minimisation

4. Accuracy

5. Storage Limitations

6. Integrity and Confidentiality

7. Accountability

By gaining a solid understanding of these principles, staff members are now better positioned to handle and safeguard sensitive information with the diligence it demands. The session also emphasised the relevance of cybersecurity in daily operations and personal life, demonstrating how data protection extends beyond the workplace to influence how we protect our families, communities, and ourselves in the digital age.

The training sparked meaningful conversations around ethical data handling, digital citizenship, and the responsibility each team member carries in preserving the trust placed in the organisation. Topics also included email phishing, password protection, safe browsing habits, and how to respond to data breaches or suspicious digital activity.
