A Holistic Approach to Economic Empowerment

In a continued effort to promote sustainable livelihoods and family resilience, a comprehensive entrepreneurship and financial literacy training was conducted for the biological parents of children enrolled in the SOS Children’s Village Francistown. The training was carefully structured to combine both theoretical knowledge and practical skills development creating a holistic learning experience that parents could immediately put into action.

Theoretical Component

Participants were introduced to a wide range of financial literacy and business development topics designed to deepen their understanding of how to manage their households and pursue entrepreneurial ventures. These included:

Budgeting and Saving: Learning how to track income and expenses, set realistic financial goals, and build a culture of saving.

Financial Management: Understanding cash flow, keeping business records, and managing household and micro-enterprise budgets effectively.

Entrepreneurship and Product Development: Identifying viable business ideas based on market needs, and turning those ideas into sellable products or services.

Marketing and Customer Engagement: Exploring low-cost strategies to promote products, attract and retain customers, and build trust within the community.

Practical Component

Recognizing the importance of hands-on learning, the training included practical sessions that allowed caregivers to develop real, income-generating skills. Key sessions included:

Beadwork: Participants were trained in creating beautiful and marketable beaded jewelry and accessories, with guidance on design trends, pricing, and product finishing.

Soap Making: Caregivers learned how to make high-quality, affordable handmade soaps focusing on ingredient sourcing, hygiene, packaging, and branding for commercial appeal.

These practical components gave participants not only technical skills but also the confidence to turn their ideas into viable business ventures.

Seeding Future Success

At the conclusion of the training, each participant received a small start-up capital to help them begin their entrepreneurial journey. This seed funding is intended to support the initial stages of business development and ensure that the skills acquired are translated into tangible outcomes.

The training also served as a platform for peer exchange, networking and encouragement as participants shared personal stories, dreams, and challenges. Many left the training motivated, hopeful, and determined to build better futures for their children.

This initiative is a reflection of SOS Children’s Villages in Botswana’s commitment to family empowerment and through economic resilience by equipping parents and caregivers with the means to support themselves. We take an important step toward breaking cycles of poverty and instability thereby creating lasting change for the children in our care.
