Proud moment for SOS Children's Villages in Botswana

Aobakwe B. Malejane joined SOS Children's Villages Botswana in 2022 as a Case Management Officer, as part of a transformative reintegration project. With a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and a Master's in Social Policy and Administration from the University of Botswana, he has sought platforms where he can channel his skills to champion child welfare, education, and social justice. His dedication and passion for making a difference resulted in him being appointed as a Social Worker in 2024.  

“I have many experiences and memories I cherish within SOS. The warmth and appreciation I receive from SOS staff and the mothers is uplifting. Most profoundly, I hold close to my heart the love and joy from the children who see me as a trusted mentor and friend,” says Aobakwe.

Aobakwe’s daily duties include case management, capacity building for caregivers, provision of services and therapy to clients in partnership with other officers/service providers and advocating for the welfare of children among other focus areas.

Aobakwe has been honoured with selection to the prestigious 2025 Mandela Washington Fellowship, where he is currently enriching his expertise in public leadership and governance at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts, United States.

Representing both his home country of Botswana and SOS Children’s Villages Botswana, he is committed to harnessing this transformative experience. He aspires to bring back innovative and impactful practices that will strengthen childcare systems not only within Botswana, but across the African continent, contributing to a future where every child grows up with dignity, opportunity, and hope. While he previously resided in Bridgewater, Massachusetts USA, he is currently living in Botswana, where his heart is.

“My leadership skills were significantly enhanced through the Mandela Washington Fellowship, an experience that empowered me to lead with vision and resilience. I have spoken passionately about the reintegration project highlighting how it benefits the children of SOS and exploring ways to upscale it. I am particularly passionate about addressing issues faced by migrant children who often get lost in complex systems. My work aims to ensure these vulnerable children are seen, supported, and given a chance to thrive turning challenges into opportunities for societal change," he concludes.

His dream is to continuously promote social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of vulnerable children.
