SOS Children’s Village, Francistown Commemorates Child Protection Week in Matshelagabedi and Mathangwane

SOS Children's Village, Francistown proudly joined the community of Matshelagabedi and Mathangwane in commemorating Child Protection Week 2025. This year’s theme, “Seen, Safe, Supported – Every Child Matters,” reminded all of us of the collective duty we share in creating safe, nurturing environments where children can grow, thrive, and reach their fullest potential.

The event was more than a commemoration it was a call to action for the entire community to stand together in safeguarding children’s rights. It brought into sharp focus the urgent need to strengthen community structures, empower families, and engage leaders in ensuring children are free from neglect, abuse, exploitation, and all forms of harm.

A Strong Community Response
The day brought together children, village leadership, child protection committees, government departments, law enforcement, educators, and local partners, all with one shared purpose: protecting and promoting the welfare of children. Each group reaffirmed their role in ensuring that the rights of children are not just acknowledged but fully protected and upheld.

Children Leading the Way
A standout moment was having children themselves serve as masters of ceremionies With confidence, eloquence, and enthusiasm, they guided the program and proved that children are not only beneficiaries of protection but also active participants and leaders in their own right. Their presence served as a strong reminder of why events like these are so important: children’s voices must be heard, valued, and acted upon.

Partnership in Action
The collaboration with local structures in both villages highlighted how much stronger communities can be when they come together. From the traditional leadership offering wisdom and guidance, to government representatives reinforcing policy frameworks, to families and caregivers pledging to provide safe homes the event showcased the  power of partnership in child protection.

Why It Matters
Child Protection Week is not just a symbolic observance. It is a timely reminder that children in Botswana particularly those without adequate parental care or those at risk of losing it need our unwavering attention. At SOS Children's Villages Botswana, we know that no child should grow up alone. Our mission is to provide care, support, and advocacy so that every child is seen, safe, and supported.

Through initiatives like this, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting children’s rights and ensuring that they grow up in an environment of love, respect, and opportunity.Together with families, communities, and partners, we can build a Botswana where every child truly matters.
