Following a review of Child safeguarding across SOS Children's Villages and the recommendations of the Independent Special Commission, SOS Children's Villages unanimously took a decision to respond to all gaps identified by the commission.  The priority included a commitment to establishing an Ombudsperson system to represent the rights of children, young people and others affected by abuse.

In preparation for the establishment of the Ombuds system, SOS Children’s Villages in Botswana participated in the 2nd International Ombuds Expo 2024 which was co-hosted by Ombudsman Botswana and International Ombuds Expo under the Theme: Trusted Institutions: Righting Injustices, Bolstering Quality Governance

The purpose of the expo was for Human Rights institutes; state, parastatals, private, academic, civil society organisations and corporates to share experience on how to strengthen the fighting of injustices faced by humans. The communications department of SOS Children’s Villages in Botswana were part of the exhibitors , sharing with visitors how SOS prevents all forms of abuse by sharing the child and youth safeguarding reporting and responding procedures as well as how SOS Ombuds for children operates.

The SOS Children's Villages Botswana Advocacy & Child Safeguarding Coordinator attended expert panel discussions, including amongst others; appreciating oversight institutions, Advancing the Role and Impact of Organisational Ombuds in Africa-Examining the Model in Multi Sectors and the intersection of human rights and Nation oversight institutions. These expert discussions give insights on how SOS Children’s Villages in Botswana should go about establishing an Ombuds for children in the country and how best to utilise the opportunity to network with other participants in the Ombuds field. The global Ombuds ceremony was officially opened by Honourable Slumber  Tsogwane, Vice President of the Republic of Botswana and the Exhibition was officially opened by Hon Antonia Florbela Rocha Araujo, President of AOMA and Ombudsman of the Republic of Angola of which SOS children's Villages Botswana is also exhibiting and sharing information with visitors on how SOS Children 's Villages prevents any form of abuse in children, by sharing the Safeguarding Reporting and Responding Procedures as well as how SOS Children's Villages Ombuds for children operates.
