Help for families in need - We Strengthen Families

Today, 1 in 10 children and young people are separated from their families, abandoned, neglected or forced to live in an abusive environment, growing up without the support they need to prepare them for their future.

Due to challenging circumstances, parents/families struggle to provide their children with a loving and stable home.
SOS Children's Villages in Botswana helps families who are in acute danger of breaking up. SOS Children’s Villages' assistance includes a wide range of tailored support, advice and education services aimed at needy children and their parents to help families overcome their challenges and help keep them together. Parents/ families receive strengthening through counseling, skills development, and they are empowered with the resources they need to overcome their difficulties. This also includes kinship care to support children to live with their extended family. With strong families, children and young people can receive the care and support they need to thrive.

Working with communities

Each child and each family is part of a community. We work with partners to develop strong social support systems for children and families to develop, grow and learn in a positive, supportive environment. Our allies include community-based organisations, local authorities and governments. Together we build resilience in vulnerable families.

We offer alternative care

If the family of origin is not the best place for a child to grow up, we offer alternative care. Our core solution is SOS family care for children who require longer term care. We constantly keep improving our work with SOS families and use our experience and competence to explore other relevant care solutions, together with partners. If it is in the best interests of a child to return to the family of origin, we actively support this. We deliver all options at consistently high quality and adapt them to the local context.

We advocate for quality care

Beyond the children we reach directly through alternative care and family strengthening, we advocate for quality care on local, national and international level. Working with governments, communities and other relevant stakeholders, we promote the delivery of quality care and call for improvements in policy and practice.
